Whether you’re a seasoned upholsterer or aspiring to add a new skill to your repertoire, upholstery not only contributes positively to the environment but also nourishes the soul. And what better way to kick off our workshop series than by creating a footstool!

Footstools, often underestimated, can serve various purposes and infuse newfound vibrancy into your living space. To assist you on your upholstery endeavours, we’ve crafted a comprehensive tutorial on creating a footstool. Explore the step-by-step guide below!

Equipment Checklist:

– Fabric

– Scissors

– Staple gun

– Stapler remover

– Foam

– Tacks

– Tacking gun

– Measuring tape

– Glue gun

Step 1: Remove The Old Fabric And Foam

Turn your existing footstool upside down, employing a staple remover to eliminate any staples or nails. Gently peel away the old fabric and foam from the footstool frame. Take this opportunity to clean and prepare the frame by sanding or painting if needed.

Step 2: Cut The Foam And Fabric

Select a comfortable yet durable foam, click here to view our foam range. Using a measuring tape and scissors, cut your foam to match the size of the top of the footstool, leaving about an inch of foam around the edges for wrapping. Subsequently, cut a piece of fabric that extends approximately 4 inches beyond the dimensions of the foam on all sides.

Step 3: Attach The Foam To The Frame

Centre the foam on the frame, ensuring a snug fit against the edges. Staple the foam to the frame, starting the process from the centre and progressing towards the corners to assure no lifting. Confirm the foam is attached securely, checking for any wrinkles or bumps throughout.

Step 4: Attach The Fabric To The Frame

Place the fabric, right side down, on a clean, flat surface. Position the footstool on top of it, with the foam facing downward. Fold the fabric over the frame’s edges and staple it in place, starting from the centre and moving towards the corners. Ensure the fabric is smooth and free of wrinkles, stapling along the bottom edge of the frame.

And voilà! A perfectly upholstered footstool ready for you or your customer!
